Cardiff & Met Hockey Club push for Historic Promotion

Updated: Mar 27, 2023

On Sunday 26th March, Cardiff & Met Mens Hockey Club play their final home game of the season. A victory will seem them make history and become the first Welsh Mens team to be promoted to Hockey’s Premier Division.

The game which will be held at the National Hockey Centre, Sophia Garden, pushes back at 2pm and will see the side take on Belper Hockey Club. A win will guarantee them the League title and promotion to the Vitality Premier Division, a feat that has never been achieved by a Welsh men’s hockey team.

Having lost only 2 games all season and with a goal difference of +46, the team are in a very strong position to take the title and make history.

The team featuring 4 of the recent Wales men’s World Cup squad have been in dominant form travelling all over England as part of the campaign.

Head Coach of Cardiff & Met Hockey Club, Walid Abdo said:

“I am absolutely delighted and proud of the outcomes this season. Our levels of consistency have been excellent. I genuinely think we have only played one bad quarter all year. It would be great to see the club and players competing in the top league in the country and a great reward for all the hard work."

Paul Whapham, Hockey Wales CEO said:

“Over recent years the performance of both our men’s and women’s hockey teams have continued to improve and move up the World rankings.

In the past 12 months we have seen Wales achieve their best positions in the Commonwealth Games and our men perform at a World Cup for the first time in our history.

Having Cardiff & Met compete against the best hockey players in the UK will increase the visibility of our sport in Wales and provide our players with a chance to test themselves at the highest level.

Playing in the England Hockey Premier Division will be great preparation for our men ahead of major international tournaments. I am sure the whole of the hockey family wishes them every success at the weekend.”
